The First Day of School

Ready or not... here we come! The kids were ready- Me-- not so much! Will bounded into our room at 6:30 this morning with his shirt half-tucked and inside-out asking "Can you please spike my hair, Mom?" The last minute hair-cuts at Great Clips last night were much appreciated by the boys. Micky informed me that I definitely paid too much. I agreed. But $11 for a streak of confidence is still a good deal in this day and age! (And fortunately for Will- he can't see the back of his head!! And for Ben- a buzz cut is always a buzz.) Once sleeping Ben was reminded that summer was over he, too, bounded out of bed. I got smart and had our special back-to-school breakfast yesterday at the lake when we had time- crepes and all the fixin's so the Honey-nut cheerios worked fine for the morning. Will had his monster-truck lunch box all packed and Ben is stoked for the corn-dog and veggies with dip.

After posing for the traditional portraits, William went straight for the lego table. There was already about 1/4 inch of rice on the floor at the exploratory-table session before we left. The kids are obviously off to a good start! Will's classroom is upstairs- so even though it's Pre-K III he feels like he's moving up in the world-- or at least the school! He made the rounds through the room and his buddy Henry got there and he said that it was fine for us to go drop off Ben. Amazing- no tears (from Mom either) this year!

Ben met his new teacher. He read the directions from the white board about where to dole out all his supplies and went straight to work on the "Jesus loves me" color page. His buddies were all excited to see him, but Ben just said "Hi" and diligently went back to work. Quite the student- a bit nervous perhaps. Micky wondered why he was so focused... I reminded him that's what Big 2nd Graders do. He's excited for soccer practice tonight, too and he carried enough stuff going into the school this morning that it looked as if he could stay there all week!

Fun times. Well, for them. The quiet that I had been craving all last week is upon me and I don't know quite what to do. So like 30% of the other Mothers in Spokane I spent a good deal of time at Target this morning and will anxiously await 3:00 pm today!

Feels like Home...

Did you ever come to a place and instantly recognize it as your ‘Ultima Thule,’ the one spot in all God’s world where you belonged- where your roots could go deep into the soil which would forever nourish you, where inspiration and spiritual blessing welled up from the earth to the top of the tallest Tamarack, spread to the encasing bowl of sky, return on every waterway to feed you everlastingly? Such a spot, so it seemed to me, was Priest Lake. ~ Nell Shipman, 1924
