This year a serious blanket of snow hit the Inland Northwest just in time for Thanksgiving. Heavy, beautiful snow. And it doesn't get much more beautiful than our beloved Priest Lake in the winter.

In between snowforts and snowshoe adventures we enjoyed our annual Christmas tree adventure with Sunnie, Lee and the girls. And I mean adventure. Perhaps some year there won't be tears.

There were some complicating factors. #1: Tyler hates boots. Despises. As evidenced by this scowl and boot in his lap. Truly a struggle to get them on- and keep them on. We've tried 3 pairs, multiple bribes and encouragement.
Nothing works. He's a toddler. #2: William had been playing in the snow
all day. And neglected to tell us that his boots were sopping wet. (Probably still wet from a week of recess playing in the snow.) That is, until we were in the truck ready to get out and he pleads "My feet are so cold- I think I have frostbite!" so like all good parents we tell him to suck it up. It's almost getting dark... we'll find our tree and be done in a bit. Sounded good in theory...

Until the kids marched right into a wet swamp. Which just pushed things into that downward screaming spiral where Aunt Sunnie was
convinced that Will had broken something. His ankle. He was screaming
that loud. Well, all ankles look weird. And when your Mom's a nurse... sympathy is saved for those things that really matter. This was a case of dramatitis, remedied by a quick trip back to the cabin by Mom and Lee for my running shoes, 2 clean fuzzy pairs of socks and my gators. The show must go on. And we needed a tree. So we chose another route...

And lo, and behold, our Christmas miracle... amongst the others. A gorgeous-ish tree.

And due to the original shape of said gorgeous tree- it was very ergonomically correct for Ben to chop down. William is thawing there in the background. Still not completely embracing the moment, but no longer screaming and tolerating the adventure. Tyler, however, not so much. More Screaming. Did I say that Tyler is not a big fan of his boots? Not. A. Fan.

I actually traded carrying the beast of a tree for a kicking, screaming toddler. I still think I got the good deal on that one.

Sammie dutifully carried the empty backpack and she and Ben took a break when we took the short hike back to the road to wait for our horsepowered sleighs.

No boots~ all better. Ty and Hannah snuggled in front of the fire and all was forgotten.

A much improved attitude back home as seen here with popcorn at trimming time. The beautiful trees that we find happen to be a type of spruce with incredibly pokey needles. Incredibly. Ben uses gloves to decorate and Ty never really seems to bother the ornaments too much once they're on. I mean who wants to end up bleeding for a bauble.

Here it is. Gorgeous in all it's splendor. Always an adventure. Memories nevertheless and a great trip to the cabin.
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
